This, too, shall pass

"This, too, shall pass."

I think this adage is a really important one to live by every day. Although it's only four words, it has helped me see the bright side of so many situations. For everyone, there are times when everything seems hopeless. There are times when the negativity or bad situations in life seem like they'll never end. I think it's really important to remember that whatever you are going through, it's only temporary, and happiness will come again. These four words are solely about the temporary nature of existence. It is so incredibly simple, yet so incredibly important. It really makes me want to hold onto the future, even when it terrifies me. Personally, I've gone through a lot this year alone. What gets me through all of it is knowing that it is only temporary, and that it, too, shall pass. There is a line in the bible that is a version of this adage:

2 Corinthians 4: 17-18 “For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long.  Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever.  So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen.  For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.

  1. So I know this adage in the context of King Solomon. I actually learned about it in the City of David in Israel and from a song I like "This too Shall Pass" by Danny Schmidt. The story goes that a king asked his wise men for a ring that would make a happy man sad and a sad man happy. The wise men brought a ring in which this quote was engraved. I agree its a beautiful quote with many applications.

  2. I really enjoy this quote, as you said it can help people get through many hard things. A lot of the time, I personally can get stuck thinking about bad things and how they seem like the worst thing ever and that the world is going to end. We've all been there. Reading this quote helps to remind us that life goes on, and things can get better. So I also really appreciate the power of those four words.

  3. Steven Antonio would be proud! I love this line and I think it is really important to know especially at this age. When the smallest things seem like the biggest things, and the stress of school and life are far too much, this is a really important line because it reminds me that nothing is permanent unless you want it to be. One individual has the ability to change something if they want too and the good times have the ability to outnumber the hard times as long as we focus solely on our own happiness.

  4. I agree that this is the perfect saying to have in the back of your head every day. It's something to live by and remember that things will get better. I loved when you said "It really makes me want to hold onto the future, even when it terrifies me." I think thats just worded perfectly and I love the way you said it. Because yes, the future is terrifying but its also terrifyingly beautiful and you don't want to get rid of the opportunity to learn your future if you can.

  5. I've never heard this adage before. When I saw the title of your blog post, I wasn't really sure what it meant but after reading your explanation of it, I totally get it. It makes so much sense and I agree with you that it is a great quote to keep in mind when you are sad or in a bad place. It is kind of similar to what Melissa wrote about. You can't spend so much time worrying, being angry, or letting something bad hold you back because you will get through it.
