| It is alarming that we have to drive to see nature, that this is an attraction |
On a walk yesterday, I had the thought that we should all go back to nature, when we didn't stare at synthetic light nor spend half our days indoors cramming our heads with information to be forgotten if we never use it in our own life. I want to learn from the animals and plants and those who have lived much longer and experienced much more than I. When we knew what we were eating, and that the air and water were not toxic, we did not have to worry so much about carcinogens and cancers and whether our meat had been shown an ounce of freedom or respect their entire life.
One might state the advantages of technology in the medical field, but most problems they solve are caused mainly by our unnatural way of life, unlike any other creature's, and unlike ours twenty years ago, even.
We do not revert back to our natural way of life, not because it is lesser than ours, nor more barbaric, but because we do not want to give up certain luxuries such as road trips and pictures. Though I still feel that if we did make the switch, it would be worth it, to learn outside the classroom, to live in the moment rather than behind a device, and to earn our food through the most direct and honest way possible, if only our environment was still healthy enough to sustain us, and wasn't half asphalt.
I really like how this gets right to the point of what the real problem is, not that we have technology but that we are consumed by our greed and unable to give up the things that are preventing us from growing and learning. I enjoyed it alot.
ReplyDeleteI like the line about learning from plants and animals and things that are older and more knowledgeable. I also really like the caption of the picture, I think it adds another layer of disgust in our lives to the passage. I do agree that our lifestyle today can not hold itself up and we need to make a change to be more conscientious of nature and what we are missing out on when we are caught up in our daily lives. However, I disagree with the idea that we should entirely revert back to old life, I think humans have come a really long way and to throw away all our knowledge would be wasteful.
ReplyDeleteI get the same feelings. Every so often you look outside and realize that you really haven't experienced the world. I sometimes long to be outside of society and technologies grip, but at this point I couldn't survive.
